This was my attempt at something Bevis Frond-like. The track actually began as an accident. I got my new eight track recorder out of its box, plugged in my electric guitar and the setting was on this weird echo-y thing. The first four bars of the song came out automatically as I tested the volume. I thought this sounds good and constructed the rest of the song around this intro.
I added the sound effects from my VHS copy of The History of Aston Villa F.C. from the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich. I was born in Birmingham and I've been a Villa fan since I was six years old. The music seemed to reflect the seemingly impossible situation Villa were up against as they struggled against a dominant Bayern side - they were only managing to stay in the game due to the heroic efforts of substitute goalie Nigel Spink. The Brian Moore commentary of Villa's goal still gives me goose bumps now: "Mortimer, Shaw, Williams, prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball in for Tony Morley. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Peter Withe!"
The Final Whistle cover pic is my attempt to recreate Withe's goal with Subbuteo. Unfortunately, I don't have Villa's 1982 away strip!
