about

Dating from 2003, this song was written at the same time as 'A Better Way' and 'Such a Shame' and the songs on the Solomon's Tump LP. I was living in a bedsit in Cheltenham, a few doors down from my favourite record shop, Vinyl Vault. I think I ignored this one because it was too confessional. It's a day in the life at the moment when I had broken up with my fiance and was living a life of unhappy singledom. I was happy I name-checked my best mate Dean and mentioned a now closed Cheltenham pub/club we used to frequent. I like to think it has a Nilon Bombers influence - Cheltenham's nineties Britpop band who got to number one in Japan with their great song, 'Superstar'. I saw them perform to an audience of about ten once, a bit like The Beatles' Aldershot gig.

lyrics

So Long

Yesterday morning I was sitting at the table
The sun was shining
I thought I’d go and watch the football

Then I saw the letters falling through the door
And feeling sick inside I picked them up off the floor
The one that had my name on I had seen the writing before
It came from her

It said so long
We had some fun together now I really must be getting along
Don’t take it wrong
I never said forever but I won’t leave you hanging on

I folded it up and then I wrote return to sender
I smashed my favourite cup
The one she bought me then I went on a bender

Met up with Deano in the Dog & Duck
These girls were chatting to us, thought I’d try my luck
The one with longer hair did not appear to be too terribly struck
(You can’t blame her)

She said so long
We had some fun together now I really must be getting along
Don’t take it wrong
I never said forever and I won’t leave you hanging on
So long
