about

Far and away my favourite song on the album although I'm not sure I nailed the recording of this one. I think part of the problem was that I bounced down too much on Final Whistle in order to make more tracks available and consequently lost a lot of definition in the rhythm section. It is very difficult limiting oneself to eight tracks and I had grand ambitions for this my first 'proper' solo LP. As I continued to make albums, I realised that I could get much better production values if I did stick to a maximum of eight tracks. Consequently, the arrangements on later albums are more simplified. Of course, this eventually led to the realisation that if I ever wanted to produce a finely polished piece of work there was nothing or it but to go into a recording studio, which I eventually did with Stay Human. Anyway, back to Now You're Gone. It is based on a real event that took place at Acton Town tube station.

lyrics

Waiting for a train it's a one-way to the end of the line
Standing in the rain I could kill you but I'm just killing time
As I try to figure how all the good things got outweighed by the bad
And I want to call you now but I used up all the credit I had

I didn't mean to bring you down
I can't believe that you're not around
I didn't mean to bring you down
But now I lost the best thing I ever found

Cos I tried to plug it in but it didn't fit the socket
So I bought a diamond ring but it fell out of my pocket
So I tried to steal your heart but my key would not unlock it
And now you're gone

I've got a lot to do cos I joined a gym and I'm in a band
But all I think about is you I remember sitting here holding hands
So I might as well go home cos I'm gonna catch my death pretty soon
My mind is turning every stone all I think about is his hands on you

I didn't mean to bring you down
I can't believe that you're not around
I didn't mean to bring you down
But now I lost the best thing I ever found

Cos I tried to plug it in but it didn't fit the socket
So I bought a diamond ring but it fell out of my pocket
So I tried to steal your heart but my key would not unlock it
And now you're gone
