Upside Down 02:47
I used to think that I was smart cos I was quite concerned with art I used to think that I was cool because I never tried at school But now I think I’m really dumb cos she has got me under her thumb And I’m not lying She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down I used to know which way to go but now I’m spinning out of control I’m so mixed up I can’t think straight, I cannot eat, I’m losing weight And if she leaves me I will die, well I will almost certainly cry And I’m not lying She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down Sometimes I wish we’d never met What if I go and leave no forwarding address? She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down She’s turning me upside down she’s turning me upside down

Digging 03:45
Moving through the morning your light is still switched on I didn’t heed the warning, I had to carry on Digging for an answer, hoping for a word Passing you in corridors, feeling quite absurd When I speak to you, when we meet I don’t know, I don’t know Will I ever find your love I don’t know, I don’t know Will I ever find your love I don’t know, I don’t know Will I ever find your love Will I ever find your love Climbing the extension, thinking I’m a fool Checking my reflection, trying to play it cool Digging for an answer, hoping for a word Passing you in corridors, feeling quite absurd When I speak to you, when we meet Then I recognise him, then I turn away Knowing I despise him, you I cannot say Digging for an answer, hoping for a word Passing you in corridors, feeling quite absurd When I speak to you, when we meet

I’m just an ordinary girl, I’m not chained to anyone I know that time is on my side I’m quite content with what I’ve got, cos what I got is fun I want to live before I die Don’t want to get involved cos there’s too many problems to solve And there’s no room to be who I am Cos I’m not that kind of girl don’t need the story of your life And I don’t want to rule your world but I’ll take you home tonight I keep on moving all the time, don’t wanna settle down I want a taste of paradise Don’t try to change me cos you’ll lose me and then you will be down I know you think I’m really nice Don’t want to get involved cos there’s too many problems to solve And there’s no room to be who I am Cos I’m not that kind of girl don’t need the story of your life And I don’t want to rule your world but I’ll take you home tonight

Come on over, I got something to show you It's taken me weeks but man it's something else So what do you say, have I made the grade I feel at my peak, I did it all by myself Anyway, you know it doesn't matter I can say I get a kick from the pain I'm quite happy in my ivory tower But I won't be coming down again yeah yeah yeah E is for envy, baby can't you see It's a part of me, I'm a green-eyed child And it's driving me wild Wait a minute I got something to show you It didn't take too long and man it's something new So tell me what do you think, let me know am I on the brink Don't do me wrong I feel I'm breaking through Anyway, just forget it You got some pretty good luck what's that to me How can you tell me you just don't get it When it's as plain as ABC D E is for envy, baby can't you see It's a part of me, I'm a green-eyed child And it's driving me wild

Astronaut 03:04
I’m so bored out of my tiny mind Am I the only one of my kind? I’m so lonely, am I the only astronaut? See the planet that I left behind I wonder what I came out here to find Was it worth it, from the earth I’m just another dot How was I to know I’d be so alone How was I to know I’d be so cold All I do is stare out into space I can’t believe I miss the human race I’m so lonely, am I the only astronaut? I’m just passing I’m not here to stay That’s what I tell myself anyway Was it worth it, on the earth it’s just another day How was I to know I’d be so alone How was I to know I’d be so cold Only human, only human I’m sorry to say I’m the blueprint, I’m the blueprint for a better way I’m so lonely am I the only castaway I’m the only, the one and only astronaut

Can't find the words to tell you How much i love you I hope you know I hope you know how great it is when you're with me and we're just doing nothing i hope you know I hope you know we'll never be apart again and when we're old we'll be the same as this day then I really hope you know I really hope you know Don't find the time to show you How much i need you I hope you know I hope you know how good it is when I'm with you and we're just doing something i hope you know I hope you know we'll never be apart again and when we're old we'll be the same as this day then I really hope you know I really hope you know

Without You 03:39
Nothing you do affects me now in any way I’m too grown up to be pissed off with anything you say I’ve taken rejection in my stride, it’s been good so far I’m moving on now with my life, I’ll be in the bar I’m doing fine, the sun still shines Without you I’m all mine Most of the time Without you I’m doing better than before, friends all say I’ve changed And there’s no reason to be bored with all the time I’ve gained No need for these domestic chores The plates pile up on every floor I can’t be bothered anymore I’m through without you I’m doing fine, the sun still shines Without you I’m all mine Most of the time Without you

The Old Ones 04:57
Darling we’re the old ones doing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones dressing like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones talking like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones living like the old ones do We take a walk and we enjoy the view And then we talk all about me and you We share a laugh we want the world to stare We run a bath, we could be anywhere Darling we’re the old ones doing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones playing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones acting like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones looking like we’re so uncool But we don’t care We have a kid but it was hard to do I’m glad we did cos now the world’s brand new We take a trip, we take the caravan It’s not too hip but we don’t give a damn We are the old ones, we don’t care we have fun We don’t play by your rules and one day you’ll be old, too Darling we’re the old ones doing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones dressing like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones talking like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones living like the old ones do We see our friends, we see their children too And we pretend that we are younger too Cos way back when, when the time would go so fast It’s not the end, no good living in the past Darling we’re the old ones doing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones playing what the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones acting like the old ones do Darling we’re the old ones looking like we’re so uncool But we don’t care

Sacrosanct 03:16
There’s nothing I can tell you that’s gonna make you stay I was never in your league anyway There’s nothing that you’re saying I haven’t heard before Save it for the next one through your door I wish you’d make your mind up soon I wish you’d love me like before Cos you’re not getting what you want Do I have to make you sacrosanct? Cos you’re not getting what you want Do I have to make you sacrosanct? There’s no way I can make you but try to understand I never felt like I was your man There’s nothing that you’re saying I haven’t heard before Save it for the next one through your door I wish you’d make your mind up soon I wish you’d love me like before Cos you’re not getting what you want Do I have to make you sacrosanct? Cos you’re not getting what you want Do I have to make you sacrosanct?

about

Antheology collects some of the many demos and tracks I have recorded since about 1998 which have not made it onto any of my albums. It was originally released in 2008 when I thought my recording career had come to an end. As I have subsequently released many more albums, I was obviously a bit premature with thoughts of retirement! Some of the demos on this album originally appeared on the 'friends only' CD 'Into The Light' in 2002. They were mastered from the original cassettes (that's how long ago this was folks!) by Mike Hill at Attic Studios, Bishop's Cleeve. Oddly, for a collection of demos and out-takes, this is my best selling release. I think it's because people assume it's by the classical boy band Blake because of the nice picture on the cover!

This is what I wrote about Antheology on its initial release in 2008:

I feel confident that I will now be able to retire in peace knowing that practically everything I’ve written that is of any merit has been made commercially available! Whether anyone will ever pick up on my music it remains to be seen. After all, the transformation in the way music is bought and sold due to the internet has made it easy for me to be able to release my music on internationally available platforms such as iTunes but it has also made it very easy for millions of other unsigned artists to do exactly the same. Everyone these days it seems is a bloody musician! Perhaps the best chance I’ve got is for some famous person to record one of my songs. I contacted American folk singer Mary Lou Lord last year and offered her ‘You Could Be Part Of My Dreams’. I’m just waiting for the phone to ring…
